Wire Balustrade Installation Guide
Pricing Guide For Wire Balustrade
One of SWR’s most ambitious installations to date.
UK building regulations (Approved Document K) require that balustrades on staircases are not easily climbable — particularly where children may be present. Horizontal wire creates a ladder-like pattern that can be climbed; vertical wires run top-to-bottom and do not. For staircase applications, vertical wire is the specification that satisfies Building Control without requiring additional justification. Horizontal wire can still be used on stairs, but vertical is the straightforward compliant choice.
SWR vertical wire systems use [X] wires across a standard bay, spaced at equal centres. Spacing is set to comply with the 100mm sphere rule — no gap in the infill should allow a 100mm sphere to pass through. Post spacing and wire count are confirmed at specification stage based on your run length.
Yes. Coated wires are available in a variety of colours for vertical wire systems — useful where the wire infill needs to complement a specific colour scheme or interior palette. Speak to the team at quote stage to confirm available colour options.
Yes. All SWR wire systems are available in AISI 304 or marine-grade 316 stainless to suit indoor, sheltered outdoor and exposed coastal applications. For outdoor use, 316 is recommended. For coastal or poolside installations, 316 is required.
No. Our balustrade systems are designed for easy fitting — a few design specifications are all it takes to create and install a unique wire rope infill system. Full installation documentation is provided with every order. For those who’d prefer not to install themselves, SWR offers supply-and-install for projects in the South East.
