Open-tread oak or steel staircases where stainless wire infill keeps the timber the visual lead. Horizontal or vertical, post-mounted or string-mounted.
Double-height spaces where a solid balustrade would block daylight. Wire keeps the architecture open while meeting the 1.1m guard-rail height.
French-door openings on first floor and above. Slimmer post profile than glass, and easier to retrofit on existing openings.
Roof terraces and garden decks where AISI 316 stainless steel is the only material rated for full coastal exposure with no maintenance schedule.

Used by self-builders, architects and main contractors who want to firm up the spec before talking to our team.
Each of the four systems below is a complete product on its own — designed for a specific application, with its own spec, install method and price band. Pick the one that fits your project.
4mm · 100mm centres · post-mounted
Eight to ten parallel stainless wires running between square or round stainless posts. The classic specification, used on the majority of staircase and terrace projects.
4MM · 100MM CENTRES · TOP & BOTTOM RAIL
Vertical stainless wire infill between top and bottom rails. A clean, contemporary alternative to horizontal wire, suited to projects where a vertical line is preferred.
4mm · side-fixed · stair stringers
Stainless wire fixed directly to the wall or stair stringer, with no posts in front of the run. Slimmest visual profile of the four systems and a great retrofit option.
4mm · diy-friendly · Made to Measure
Easy to cut to length, pre-tensioned stainless wire kits for self-builders fitting their own balustrade. Includes wire, tensioners, posts and full installation guide. Quick despatch.
Every wire balustrade we supply is engineered to comply with BS 6180:2011 (barriers in and about buildings) and Approved Document K. Tension calculations are project-specific and signed off before fabrication.

One of SWR’s most ambitious installations to date.
Most staircase and terrace projects use Horizontal Wire — the classic spec. Vertical Wire is the answer where children will be present, since the 100mm sphere rule needs to be met. Wall-Mounted Wire is the right choice for retrofit work or narrow stair flights without space for posts. Self-Assembly Kits are the route for self-builders fitting their own balustrade with timber posts. If you’re not sure which one fits, send us a sketch and we’ll tell you straight.
Yes, on every project we supply. All four wire balustrade systems are engineered to BS 6180:2011 and Approved Document K. For child-safe applications, we specify vertical wire at 90mm centres rather than horizontal. Tension calculations are project-specific and signed off before fabrication.
