The brief
Safety on the rooftop, without losing the view.
A frameless glass solution for a 19th-century listed home in the Essex countryside.
Located in the rolling countryside of rural Essex, this impressive property was originally built in the 19th century and is a Grade II listed building. It is now the home of Anne and David Marshall, who have carried out extensive renovations. Despite the changes, the building still retains its original features and much of its 19th-century charm.
At the back of the property, the Marshalls built an indoor swimming pool with a flat roof. Walk up the steps and onto the roof, and you are rewarded with an area for relaxation plus fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. As it is elevated, there is a sheer drop that posed serious safety concerns, so barriers were needed around the entire perimeter to enjoy the space fully.
The customers had originally hired a different company to install the balustrade, but were let down when the installer abandoned the project without notice, leaving the couple in limbo. They got in touch with SWR to take over and restore their confidence in what had been a challenging project.

SWR Balustrade were very professional from start to finish and kept me informed during the entire process.
I would have no issue with recommending them to anyone who needs balustrade fitted.

The result
30 metres. Uninterrupted views.
The balustrade had to serve a safety function while ensuring the surrounding views remained unobstructed. SWR’s frameless glass channel system offers an understated look suitable for any building, whether modern or traditional, using toughened laminate glass that withstands high impact yet keeps fragments within the pane if broken. Stainless-steel handrails complete the tasteful design.
All stainless-steel parts were fabricated to the correct dimensions in SWR’s production facilities before being sent to site. In total, 30 metres of toughened laminate glass were installed to create a completely safe area that will be enjoyed for years to come.
